Flowers have a mixed heritage in the arts. On the one hand, they have represented lofty emotions (Shakespeare’s “rosemary is for remembrance”) and sexuality (O’Keefe). On the other, they are pretty, a suitable subject for Sunday watercolorists. They are a perfect metaphor for the half empty/half full debate: it all depends upon one’s viewpoint.
For contemporary artists, both viewpoints tend to be highlighted simultaneously. Flowers in the 21st century have come to represent consumerism, modernism, environmentalism, to reflect our architecture, our psyche, our utopias, allowing the artists to pry a more positive outlook out of misfortune.
The thirteen artists in this May show expose a wide range of interpretations revolving around the word “flower.” Luisa forms flowers with commercial labels. David shows how they are employed as an advertising tool. Cati miniaturizes them into stamps with a contradictory message. Norma creates them out of dance steps. Rebecca uses them to symbolize the transitory nature of life. Gary explodes them into abstraction. Roland embeds them in modernism. Dawn teases them out of the web of LA street maps. Marilla concocts them from mushroom spores. Claudine explores the dissolution of forms. For Mary Addison, they are a juxtaposition of southern decay and play. Mery Lynn fashions them out of glitter. Greg burns them into being.

I'll have two watercolors in this show. I'm titling them now. I did them over the winter. I was going to leave the works on paper untitled, but that doesn't seem right. I revisited Ruskin, my go-to guy for nature and painting.

AND on the other coast, roughly around the same time, I will also have 2 watercolors/gouaches in this show.

March 30, 2011

I just sent out an exhibition update and listed 2 out of 4 current & upcoming events as happening in 2010, not 2011.

I just found another typo. I swear I hit spell check and proofed at least 3 times. My career is over. In all seriousness, I need an office assistnat. assistant. Okay, now I'm being funny. But seriously, typos are no laughing matter.
And just when I was so excited to have formatted it for mobile viewing.
Here is the corrected version:

I was awarded a year-long residency and exhibition at Cummins Station in downtown Nashville as part of their Community Arts Program. The residency began in February of 2011. My studio is a rehabbed train car and is open one day a week to the public. Feel free to contact me for a studio visit at the number listed below. I've been working on a series of abstract watercolors, and after two years of working on an intimate scale, I'm working large again. The exhibition will take place near the end of the residency, date TBA.

September 29, 2010

I'm a little slow getting back into the swing of things here.

On the other hand, that's what's so great about being back here. Slowness.

On the bright side, I was very happy to be supported by my L.A. artist friends and some familiar faces at the opening reception. I was also pleasantly surprised to meet someone at the artist talk who had been following my blog for a couple of years. (And just when I was about to go all radio silent.) The gallery recorded my talk, but I have no idea what I said. I sold a painting on opening night, which was an instant mood lifter. All in all, the trip ended pleasantly enough. Show ends October 31st. Huge thanks to my friends Sharon and then Matina for hosting me, and Meg for a great dinner around her abandoned pool. (Meg's pool is dry and makes a good dog run. I, as you may remember, have a small ecosystem.) It was so nice visiting with people. And again, a huge thanks to everyone who came out to the opening and the talk.

It was pretty much hot as f*ck the entire time I was in L.A., and in celebration of being 49 and a half, I bought a skimpy hippie chick dress  on sale, and threw all caution to the wind. No one noticed my mid-life, trampy hot, intellectual art babe look. Meanwhile back in Nashville, I'm digging out old cable knit sweaters and am certain the motorcycle boots will be part of my fall uniform.

I am tired though, and  was so happy to sleep in my own bed, soak in my own bathtub, and have coffee in my favorite coffee mug while starring out my window. I even cranked up the gas logs today in the fireplace. Yep. It was slightly chilly this morning. I missed The Great Dust Motto. (Dust mop+ Otto= Dust Motto.) I picked him up today. Such a fluffy guy when he's all clean, and his paws no longer look like wookie feet. And thus, life on planet Nashville resumes. I am ready to embrace life here for a while: work, make more paintings, network and meet  with nice people, be open to change, clean house, make repairs, stare at trees, pull weeds, enjoy life. I keep getting inspired by LaRose's plein air paintings and want to do some and hawk them on ebay as well, but so far, I'm all talk. I fear I may have trouble separating my studio practice like that. Still, I am inspired.

Fluid: Elusive Chapters from the Passage of Time, (Vol. 1: The Lost Months)

I anticipate getting installation shots before the show comes down using a real photographer or else I'm so fucked. These are grainy and wouldn't get me the time of day. There are more images from the weekend at my flickr site. The small wall does not photograph well by moi and I suppose I can safely say this work will probably not find it's way into a corporate lobby art collection. But who knows. It does look much better in person and up close. You might have figured that out.

A few people have asked if I will be showing in Nashville or in the vicinity. I need to start working the room, so to speak, and by room, I am referring to this side of the country.

May 24, 2010

I wouldn't take pics of my studio even if you paid me, well maybe if you paid me, I mean, why not?

So instead I'll post images from the opening. I'll upload more to Flickr later.
Prior to the opening, I did 4 paintings during the installation. Total time: about 8 hours, counting coffee breaks. The point was to make 4 paintings, site-specific, in a set amount of time, and in keeping with my MO, works that filter my day-to-day experiences. The gallery closed at 6 pm, so at 5:59pm I started cleaning up. The paintings weren't really "finished," but then again, that was one of the risks. Overall, about a 10-hour day counting the drive. Maybe a bit more, counting prep and break-down. Sushi afterward, which means I'm not 100% vegan anymore. But let's face it, I'll be land-locked in less then 3 weeks. Good-bye Sushi.

The opening in Glendale was this past Saturday. And, yes, I did a live painting on the wall during the reception. And, yes, this is the wave of my future. I liked doing this. It's efficient and I felt like the response was good. I like the idea of my practice consisting of just me and my supplies, as opposed to materials. A few people asked what I would do if someone wanted to buy them. I have to go back on Wednesday to shoot the work for real, but here are a few works that were shot during the opening. The white balance is all over the place. Sure, I'd love to spend the day tweaking this stuff, but I'm a little pressed for time right now. The studio is a fright.

One more note about ARTRA.

I met with my Otis students yesterday and we talked about the ARTRA show. It was a fantastic discussion. Curatorial premise, cultural differences and expectations, commodification, what inspires people to make art, materials used, the space in which we look at art, what it all means etc. Most of my students are not fine art majors. It's a Sunday class, so I've got a good cross-section and they're smart. Most of them are interested in design of some sort. Yes, I know, it's funny since I tend to be the anti-christ of design, but anyhoo, the one thing that surprised me was to hear some of them talk about how difficult it is to SEE art here in L.A. Unlike NYC, where you amble by a gallery and stop in- here, you have to make a concerted effort to visit a gallery. Many of my students said they found the commercial setting of galleries intimidating since they don't plan on buying art. Therefore, they didn't feel like a gallery was a place to make a special trip just to look at art. Seeing as artists, we're ingrained from day one to look as a much art as we can, I don't think it occurred to me that galleries would be an intimidating place to look at art. Ironic, no?

It does require effort to look at art. I have to schedule it on my calendar. I'm not so great with openings. I go to openings to say hello to people and I am notoriously remiss at attending more than 2 or 3 openings in an evening. Sometimes I'm notoriously remiss at attending one opening in an evening.

I'll post some new work later on. The Furry One is demanding my attention right now.

Try Harder posted some pics of ARTRA

And this is the link where you can see my work.

While you're there, check out other works from the exhibit and other events going down in LALA. Nice camera work, too.

All work and no play....

For some archaic reason I aim to stay tech-free on Sundays, but it rarely works. My father-in-law passed away this morning. I felt obligated to post that since I've posted everything else.

I had a fairly good day in the studio on Friday with some new paintings. For another archaic reason, I try not to paint on Sundays either, so I'm just kind of hanging out listening to the wind and the plants scraping against my window. I am sitting on the sofa and Fang and I are attached at the hip.

This morning I was at a brunch/project meeting with about 25 other artists. It sounds like an interesting project. Essentially there's an archaeological museum in a Ameila, Italy and for the first phase of the project, we've been invited to exhibit a introductory work in the museum. The second phase involves making something more site-specific for next summer. More details to follow.

I should probably try to do something fun soon. I could use some side-splitting fun. Otherwise, we're likely to become a scaled down version of The Shining over here.

October 21, 2008

I had a nice time.

I still get nervous speaking in front of a group of people about my art. I always forget what's currently important and try and remember what was important, which comes out kind of flat, cause in a way it's like remembering what it was like being in love with an old boyfriend, but talking about it after you've moved on. I mean I still seriously LOVE the paintings I made last year, and worked really intensely on them, but it always feels rather scientific to discuss them from a distance. Or I could chalk it up to being socially inept, which is a bit closer to the truth.

Kevin spoke about his work,

then I spoke about my work,

then Eric spoke about his work,

then Lester wrapped it up.

Eric said everything about his work that I wished I had said about mine, but Eric managed to actually express it succinctly. I, on the other hand, recall making some obscure point about how in painting I'm trying to come up with the flavor equivalent of peanut butter and sardines rather than peanut butter and chocolate. Plus I always try and pretend It has nothing to do with formalism and paint. So sometimes under pressure, I'm just a blatant liar.

The weirdest thing- and this happens to me occasionally and it creeps me out, but in an okay way-a woman came up to me almost as soon as I got there and told me she recognized me from my paintings. I was a little confused, because they're not many pictures of me AND my paintings floating around, but she went on explain that she "knew" that my paintings belonged to me and she wasn't able to connect the other artists to their paintings. It gets weirder. After I spoke, she came up to me again and told me my paintings were really self-portraits. And she said it in one of those knowing voices like she knew something I didn't know. Very X-file. It's true of course, but like I'd ever admit that in public.

Big thanks to Kristi & Daniel and Chris.

Gallery Hop

More of a leap, than a hop. I'm such a west-sider.

Made a brief stop at Kristi Engle Gallery for the Karl Erickson & Andrew Falkowski show, Age of Empires, then back to Culver City for a terrible dinner at Natalee Thai. The food was ok. like, o...kay, but the table next to us was a foursome of amazingly obnoxious self-obsessed and apparently shallow, but loud individuals.

And for the record, I officially do not like coconut juice. Yes, on a desert island, I would drink it, but otherwise, nope.

June Gloom

You can even wiki it.
It started on June 1st. Creepy how accurate it was. Thank heavens we're a few miles off the coast, so it tends to lift around noon over here in scenic Culver City, but that may explain the seasonal malaise I'm experiencing now. Even as I type.

Matt just flew off to New York for his 3rd degree black belt test in Karate. I tried to practice Karate. Twice. I'd be okay if some troglodyte tried to attack me, because I learned enough to get some self-defense moves down, plus I also took a self-defense class after a break-in— but physical bodily grace in the form of sport posturing does not become me. I tried ballet as a kid and thanks to Fort Nightly when I was in 7th grade, I know how to fake a waltz. But I have some slight Left-Right dyslexia and I get dizzy and confused if I try to move too many limbs rapidly all at once.

It's also the last week for my show at Kristi Engle. It comes down this Saturday. I think it was a good run. People genuinely seemed to enjoy it and I got a review that, as much as I'd like to pretend I've no interest in petty things like reviews, made me feel pretty effing fantastic. It was kind of like getting a promotion for doing my job really well. Though I'm not really sure what I got promoted to. Maybe the corner studio with the keys to the private slop sink. Oh wait, already got that. But windows, maybe a studio with windows one day....

OK. Back to work. June Gloom has almost lifted.

June 12-15, 2008

Yep, the fun begins again in about 2 weeks. I feel pretty lucky to have all this happening at once. I will unfortunately miss the opening as the show at Kristi Engle in Los Angeles comes down June 7th and I figured I should maximize my time out here. Plus, American Airlines was having their little crisis and I couldn't get through to change my reservations.

Still, if you're east of the Mississippi in June, I will have some smaller paintings showing alongside some super talented artists at Tag art gallery in Nashville and at the Affordable Art Fair in NYC.

There's a part of me that would like to be at both events, but the real me will be relaxing with one of my closest friends in Del Rey Beach, Florida for a few days during all the hoopla. Then I'll be back in Nashville while the show is up, and I'm planning on meeting some friends at the gallery, doing lunch, etc. That will be nice.

And then there's that cross country motorcycle trip I haven't fleshed out yet.
