Hudson, NY; day two, and then some.

I am behind in posting. I was fortunate to be able to make it to NY and LA for the two openings. I am getting ready to embark on a major spring/summer cleaning around here, so hopefully that will help to support my travel and show expenses. I felt it was necessary to participate in person. This is what I do. It was nice being part of the soup, as they say.

First up, the show at John Davis Gallery in Hudson, New York-

Trying to be one of the center of attentions, I found it difficult to remain poised and play paparazzi simultaneously. And yet...
My work is on the second floor of the carriage house in the small rooms. I was pleased with their presence in the intimate spaces.

Me, Lucy Mink Covello
Lucy was on an art pilgrimage and stopped in Hudson to see the show. Thanks LMC!

Martin Bromirski

Martin's work is on the second floor too.

Hypothetical questions and mythical answers:
Q: Do you make small paintings just to sell?
A: No.
Q: Have you ever painted large?
A: Yes, but only for about 20 years or so.

Whoa there. 14 x 11 inches and  9 x 7 inches

"Pirate Mask"

Next up. LA.

May 28, 2012

Upstate NY, day one.

As soon as I got to the airport, the sole of my shoe fell off. I bought some chewing gum and tried to do a quick fix. Bubble gum would have worked better. I finally found some shoe goo. I should have constructed some sort of secret exhibition in my sole before I glued it back together.

I got in a mile run at Olana, Frederick Church's home. "And I own it" was apparently his signature catchphrase. It's on all the signage.

Nice trails. Being in a strange place, I suddenly got creeped out about running on a deserted trail at sunset in upstate New York. Much the way someone from upstate New York might keep creeped out running on a trail in the Deep South at sunset. I only did one mile. I read the paper too much.

I headed over to the Rip Van Winkle Bridge and logged a 2-mile run on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. There are several suicide hot lines on the bridge. I had a recurring thought that I would would trip and my iphone would catapult out of my hand. I had to shift focus a couple of times.

End of day one. Tomorrow, I will post some art and people.

May 24, 2012

It's here. The show at John Davis Gallery opens today.

I am thrilled and honored to have this opportunity to show with John. The show will be on the second floor of the carriage house in the small rooms. It will consist of mostly new work, but he also selected a few of the pool and flower paintings, which is somehow apropos.

Tomorrow marks two years since my mom passed away. She was one of the most supportive people in my life and I'm grateful for the love and appreciation of art and literature which was instilled in me at a very early age. And of course, the genetic idiosyncrasies. The gift that keeps on giving.

Flowers have a mixed heritage in the arts. On the one hand, they have represented lofty emotions (Shakespeare’s “rosemary is for remembrance”) and sexuality (O’Keefe). On the other, they are pretty, a suitable subject for Sunday watercolorists. They are a perfect metaphor for the half empty/half full debate: it all depends upon one’s viewpoint.
For contemporary artists, both viewpoints tend to be highlighted simultaneously. Flowers in the 21st century have come to represent consumerism, modernism, environmentalism, to reflect our architecture, our psyche, our utopias, allowing the artists to pry a more positive outlook out of misfortune.
The thirteen artists in this May show expose a wide range of interpretations revolving around the word “flower.” Luisa forms flowers with commercial labels. David shows how they are employed as an advertising tool. Cati miniaturizes them into stamps with a contradictory message. Norma creates them out of dance steps. Rebecca uses them to symbolize the transitory nature of life. Gary explodes them into abstraction. Roland embeds them in modernism. Dawn teases them out of the web of LA street maps. Marilla concocts them from mushroom spores. Claudine explores the dissolution of forms. For Mary Addison, they are a juxtaposition of southern decay and play. Mery Lynn fashions them out of glitter. Greg burns them into being.

I'll have two watercolors in this show. I'm titling them now. I did them over the winter. I was going to leave the works on paper untitled, but that doesn't seem right. I revisited Ruskin, my go-to guy for nature and painting.

AND on the other coast, roughly around the same time, I will also have 2 watercolors/gouaches in this show.

August 10, 2009

I decided to leak some new images to Kris Chatterson's blog.

Kris Chatterson featured me on his blog KCLOG. Kris is painter based in New York. He is represented by Western Project here in LA. His blog is devoted to featuring other artists and what's on the walls in New York and LA.*

*As opposed to my blog, which was most recently devoted to telling you how many William Orbit tracks it takes to get from Culver City to Glendale and back.

PS. Thanks Kris!

June 12-15, 2008

Yep, the fun begins again in about 2 weeks. I feel pretty lucky to have all this happening at once. I will unfortunately miss the opening as the show at Kristi Engle in Los Angeles comes down June 7th and I figured I should maximize my time out here. Plus, American Airlines was having their little crisis and I couldn't get through to change my reservations.

Still, if you're east of the Mississippi in June, I will have some smaller paintings showing alongside some super talented artists at Tag art gallery in Nashville and at the Affordable Art Fair in NYC.

There's a part of me that would like to be at both events, but the real me will be relaxing with one of my closest friends in Del Rey Beach, Florida for a few days during all the hoopla. Then I'll be back in Nashville while the show is up, and I'm planning on meeting some friends at the gallery, doing lunch, etc. That will be nice.

And then there's that cross country motorcycle trip I haven't fleshed out yet.

It's over.

Nov 7, 2020. Tears of joy and relief. It's been unreal and I'm ready to get back to a sense of normalcy. The desert has been tough. ...
